Cataract surgery using the latest in computer technology is now available to NHS patients.
The system has also been streamlined so that instead of three appointments weeks apart people can have the pre-operative checks and scans immediately before the operation at Circle, a privately-run treatment centre in Nottingham.
It is the brainchild of consultant ophthalmologist Amar Alwitry.
Patients diagnosed with cataracts are sent to doctors for an initial assessment.
They have to return for a pre-operation appointment to measure the eye and finalise what work is to be done.
The third appointment is the operation to remove the cataract.
Mr Alwitry said: "Circle has invested £120,000 in the latest technology.
"It is one of the only places outside London using this computer-assisted cataract surgery equipment.
"We take scans of the eye, input data and then the computer works out where we should place our incision and how we should put the lens in the eye to give the best outcome.
"I have also designed a service where Leicestershire patients can come straight to Circle Nottingham, see me, have all the investigations and then surgery the same day.
"Instead of waiting three or four months for surgery, patients can have it done all in one day."
