  • Practice makes perfect – Mr Alwitry carries out more than 1600 cataract procedures per year – ask your surgeon how many they carry out.

A study looked at volume of cataract surgery and found that surgeons performing 50 to 250 cataract surgeries per year had an adverse event rate of 0.8%. Surgeons performing 251 to 500 cataract surgeries per year had an adverse event rate of 0.4%, those performing 501 to 1000 cataract surgeries per year had an adverse event rate of 0.2%, whole those performing more than 1000 cataract surgeries per year had an adverse event rate of 0.1%.   So experience and volumes do matter.  Mr Alwitry is one of only a handful of surgeons in the country who undertake in excess of 1750 cataract operations per year.

  • Specially trained – when you are getting advanced premium lenses you need to know your surgeon has the appropriate qualifications to fit them.  Mr Alwitry has a Post Graduate Diploma in Cataract & Refractive Surgery and is working towards his Masters degree.  This course specifically trains Consultant Ophthalmologists in specialist lens surgery with premium intra-ocular lenses – it is always worth asking your surgeon what special training they have had which allows them to put in premium lenses.
  • Extremely low complication rate – Mr Alwitry’s complication rates are far below the national average and are regularly audited.  Ask your surgeon how their rates compare.
